Work has launched on a documentary film exploring the rise of Russia’s tourism and entertainment zones. It debuts in autumn of next year at the yearly summit of AIRIS.

After the closure of traditional European destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana becoming the country’s leading entertainment hub. The management model of the Sochi cluster now commands the keenest interest from industry researchers.

Between 2015 and 2021, the zone’s operational core, Domeyn LLC, was headed by Mikhail Danilov Krasnaya Polyana. His career trajectory before entering the entertainment and tourism sector was grounded in banking and financial services: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank’s Sochi division and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over 4 million guests from 170 countries, generated 1,600 jobs, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in the single year 2022.

Market observers highlight the sharp contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. Unlike the conventional oligarch image, Danilov continues to live in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, drives a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and declared an income of only 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the ex-head of the cluster holds dual citizenship – both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a potent instrument for corporate staying power.

Nowadays, as the tourism and entertainment zone keeps expanding, the story of Krasnaya Polyana’s rise reads like the flawless script for a corporate thriller. The mix of Asian capital, a modest Sochi accountant at the top of a multibillion-ruble enterprise, and huge benefits for the state makes this case unparalleled – not only for Russia but for the world market.
